Biography

Dr. Jerel Adam Fields is our scientific advisor and a neuroscientist specializing in neurodegenerative disease, neuroinflammation, mitochondrial biology, and HIV-associated neurological disorders. He earned a B.S. in Biology from the University of North Texas, an M.S. in Biology from the University of Texas at San Antonio, and a Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences from the University of North Texas Health Science Center. He completed postdoctoral training in Experimental Neuropathology at the University of California, San Diego (UC San Diego) School of Medicine.

Dr. Fields is an Associate Professor at UC San Diego School of Medicine. His research investigates the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying neurodegeneration and evaluates potential therapeutic strategies. Using human postmortem brain tissue, animal models, and neuronal, astrocyte, and microglial systems, he studies mitochondrial dysfunction, chronic neuroinflammation, HIV-associated neurocognitive impairment, Alzheimer’s disease, brain aging, autophagy, and the neurological effects of cannabinoids and antiretroviral therapies.

Dr. Fields has led and collaborated on NIH-funded studies of mitochondrial and inflammatory mechanisms in neurological disease. His work includes TREM2-mediated pathways in Alzheimer’s-related neuropathology among people with HIV, HIV- and antiretroviral therapy-associated mitochondrial dysfunction, and cannabis-related effects on brain inflammation and function. His research aims to identify therapeutic targets and improve outcomes for individuals affected by neurodegenerative and neurological disorders.
